We spend a great deal of time trying to understand dogs.
Perhaps we should spend a little more time appreciating how extraordinarily dogs have become at understanding us.

A dog watches your face when you enter the room. It hears something in your voice that another person might miss. It notices when you are tense. It recognizes anger. It responds to fear. And, remarkably, a smile from a stranger may activate parts of its brain associated with reward.
For thousands of years, humans have been changing the bodies of dogs.
We bred some to herd sheep. Others to retrieve birds, guard property, hunt vermin, pull sleds, follow scent trails or simply sit beside us.
But perhaps the most extraordinary consequence of domestication is something we cannot see from the outside.
We changed the dog brain.
And in doing so, we may have created an animal unusually equipped to live in the human emotional world.
Looking Inside the Dog Brain
For most of the history of veterinary medicine, understanding the canine brain depended largely upon anatomy, pathology and observations of behavior.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging has changed that.
Researchers can now examine which areas of the brain become active while an awake dog experiences stimuli.
There is, however, an obvious problem.
Anyone who has undergone an MRI knows that it is hardly a relaxing environment. The scanner is confined, noisy and intimidating, and meaningful imaging requires the subject to remain remarkably still.
Try explaining that to a Border Collie.
In one recent study described in the material accompanying this blog, researchers recruited 14 dogs, including Border Collies, Golden Retrievers, a Labrador Retriever and a mixed-breed dog. The dogs underwent approximately 20 training sessions during which they learned to lie quietly in an MRI scanner in a sphinx-like position, resting their jaws on a chin support.
They were gradually trained from remaining still for only a few seconds to tolerating a three-minute scan.
Then researchers showed them something deceptively simple.
Human faces.
The faces displayed happiness, sadness, anger, fear or a neutral expression.
The dogs' brains did not respond to all of them in the same way.
Your Smile Matters
Happy human faces produced activity in the dogs' temporal cortex, involved in recognizing faces and processing emotional information.
But something even more intriguing happened.
The caudate nucleus also became active.
That matters because the caudate is associated with reward and motivation.
In other words, a smiling human face may have emotional significance to a dog resembling the significance of something rewarding.
And the person did not have to be the dog's owner.
A stranger's smile could produce the response.
Think about that for a moment.
Somewhere during the long relationship between Homo sapiens and Canis familiaris, dogs became sufficiently attuned to us that the configuration of a human face - turned upward at the corners of the mouth - could acquire biological significance inside the canine brain.
We smile.
Their brain responds.
That is quite a legacy of domestication.
Dogs Know That Anger Is Not Sadness
The findings become even more interesting when negative emotions are considered.
Fear, sadness and anger produced patterns of activation different from happiness, and there was evidence that dogs could distinguish between some negative human facial expressions.
That makes evolutionary sense.
For an animal living intimately with another species, recognizing that species' emotional state could be enormously advantageous.
A frightened human might indicate:
Something dangerous is nearby.
An angry human might mean:
I may be the danger.
Sadness presents a rather different problem. It may be socially important, but it does not necessarily predict an immediate threat.
The attached material notes that dogs appeared particularly responsive to fear and anger.
We often think of communication between humans and dogs as something we teach dogs.
Sit. Stay. Come. Heel.
But perhaps we have that relationship partly backwards.
Dogs have spent thousands of years learning human.
The Dog Is Reading More Than Your Face
Of course, an MRI experiment showing dogs photographs of faces captures only a tiny fraction of the information available to a dog standing beside us.
A real person is an extraordinarily complicated biological signal.
Our faces change. Our posture changes. Our voices change. Our movements change. And our smell changes.
Dogs inhabit an olfactory world that humans can barely imagine. Emerging research suggests that they can respond to odors associated with human fear, anxiety and stress.
So, when we think our dog somehow knows that something is wrong, perhaps there is considerably less mystery involved than we imagine.
The dog may be simultaneously processing our facial expression, posture, movement, vocal tone and odor.
We call it intuition.
The dog may call it Tuesday.
But Do We Understand Them?
Here lies one of the great asymmetries of the human-dog relationship.
Dogs have become remarkably accomplished students of human behavior.
Humans remain surprisingly poor students of dogs.
Consider the famous guilty look.
You arrive home.
The garbage bin has been overturned.
The dog lowers its head, avoids eye contact, pulls its ears backwards and looks unmistakably - guilty.
Case closed.
Except perhaps it isn't.
Alexandra Horowitz tested precisely this assumption. Dogs were placed in situations in which they had either obeyed or disobeyed an owner's instruction. The behavior interpreted by humans as guilt correlated more closely with the owner's response - particularly scolding - than with whether the dog had actually committed the forbidden act.
The dog may not be saying:
I know I did something morally wrong.
It may instead be saying:
I know you are angry.
That distinction is enormous.
And once again, it suggests that the dog may be reading the human more accurately than the human is reading the dog.
What About Jealousy?
Other apparently human emotions become equally interesting.
Dog owners routinely describe their animals as jealous.
Pet one dog and another pushes between you.
Welcome a new puppy and the older dog suddenly demands attention.
Anthropomorphism?
Perhaps.
But experiments suggest there may be something more complicated occurring.
In a 2014 study, dogs displayed significantly more behaviors associated with jealousy when their owners showed affection toward what appeared to be another dog than when the owners interacted with nonsocial objects. The researchers cautiously suggested that a primordial form of jealousy might therefore occur outside humans.
We should be careful here.
Behavior suggesting jealousy is not necessarily proof that a dog subjectively experiences jealousy exactly as a human does.
That distinction is scientifically important.
But dismissing complex canine emotional behavior simply because dogs cannot describe their internal experiences is equally problematic.
The fascinating territory lies between anthropomorphism and anthropodenial - between attributing too much humanity to animals and refusing to recognize capacities simply because they are not human.
We Didn't Just Breed Different Bodies
Perhaps the most intriguing research concerns what selective breeding has done to the physical organization of the canine brain.
Another recent study cited in the attached material compared ancient dog lineages - including Samoyeds, New Guinea singing dogs and African and Korean village dogs - with more recently developed breeds such as Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds.
The researchers reported that selection and learning have shaped communication-related neural networks in modern dogs, enhancing their capacity to process human words and vocal information.
That raises a fascinating possibility.
When humans selected dogs for behaviors, we were not merely changing coat color, body size, skull shape or running speed.
We were selecting neural circuitry.
Generation after generation.
Century after century.
We were, quite literally, redesigning the canine brain.
The Great Experiment
Domestication may therefore represent one of the longest neuroscience experiments ever conducted.
There was no laboratory.
No research grant.
No Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
No experimental protocol.
Just two species living together.
Humans selected dogs that were useful, manageable and responsive to us. Dogs capable of interpreting human signals may have enjoyed advantages in food, protection, reproduction and companionship.
Those animals produced descendants.
And the process continued for thousands of years.
What eventually emerged was something extraordinary.
Not simply a domesticated wolf.
Not merely an animal capable of living around people.
But an animal whose brain became increasingly specialized for living with another species.
Us.
Perhaps Intelligence Is the Wrong Question
People love asking which dog breed is smartest.
Border Collies usually do rather well in such discussions.
But intelligence is a remarkably human-centered concept.
Perhaps the more interesting question is:
What kind of intelligence has the dog evolved?
The answer may be social intelligence of a very particular kind.
Dogs do something extraordinary every day that we barely notice.
They successfully navigate a society belonging to another species.
They interpret our gestures.
They monitor our voices.
They watch our faces.
They smell our emotional state.
They learn our routines.
They anticipate our behavior.
And increasingly, neuroscience suggests that thousands of years of domestication have helped build a brain particularly suited to doing exactly that.
And Then There Is the Walk
There is one final lesson from this research, and it may be the most practical.
We have spent thousands of years asking dogs to adapt to our world.
Perhaps occasionally we should allow them to inhabit theirs.
For humans, a walk is often exercise.
We have a destination. We have a route. We have a schedule.
The dog stops. Again. And sniffs the same tree for what seems like an eternity.
We pull the leash.
But smell is not incidental to a dog. It is information.
That tree trunk, lamp post or patch of grass may contain an extraordinary collection of biological information deposited by animals that passed there hours - or days - before.
As animal welfare scientist Mia Cobb puts it in the source material, dogs live in a smell-based world. Allowing them time to investigate that world is therefore an important component of their welfare.
Perhaps we should stop thinking of sniffing as something that interrupts the walk.
For the dog, sniffing may be the walk.
The Dog Beside Us
We often describe dogs as man's best friend.
It is a pleasant phrase.
But neuroscience is beginning to reveal something considerably more interesting.
Dogs may be one of evolution's great specialists in interspecies communication.
Their brains have been shaped not simply by natural selection, but by thousands of years of intimate association with human beings.
They watch us. They listen to us. They smell us. They anticipate us.
And remarkably, they may understand aspects of our emotional state before we have said a single word.
Perhaps the greatest irony of the human-dog relationship is therefore this:
After thousands of years together, dogs may have become better at reading us than we have become at reading them.
And that should change not only how we think about the canine brain.
It should change how we treat the dog standing beside us.
Commentary
One thing I particularly like about this essay is that the central theme is not simply canine cognition.
It is the idea that domestication has produced a brain specialized, to an unusual degree, for understanding another species.
That gives the essay a larger evolutionary argument and connects the facial-expression, guilt, jealousy, olfaction, breeding and welfare studies rather than presenting them as disconnected findings.
